Walking Together in God's Service

The Chimes

AUGUST CHIMES

Brian’s Note

The ability and the willingness to experiment are essential for moving forward in any arena of life. Although we know this to be true of all other frontiers of life, it is rarely applied to the church. Most churches are places where experimentation is discouraged – if it is even discussed at all! Consequently, churches are often perceived as predictable, routine, boring, and out of touch. Unfortunately, the perception is all too often the reality at churches.

One of the most helpful and meaningful things that I can help facilitate in this interim time is to create a culture and climate of experimentation. As you know, one way we have been seeking to do this by creating different kinds of worship experiences each week. The worship experience that stands out most to me is Freedom Sunday on July 4th. It was an incredible joy to watch you as a church family leading in every aspect of worship. I have a hunch that you even surprised yourselves. I have enjoyed sharing the story of Freedom Sunday on an almost daily basis as I bump into people along the way.

Let me encourage you to continue to live on the experimental edge. Mission always happens on the edge – take a look at Jesus and notice how much of his life was lived on the edge of mission. The primary reason that churches rarely live on the missional edge is that experiments can be risky and dangerous. Our natural tendency for security, order, and control often hold us back from Kingdom living. We often think of churches as safe havens rather than mission outposts.

Oftentimes, we fear the possibility of embarrassment that comes when an experiment doesn’t go as planned. It is undeniably true that not all experiments work and there is the possibility for failure. However, without experimentation there is little room for growth, vitality, and mission. If we are afraid of failure, we will have virtually no Kingdom impact in our world. As churches, we are sometimes more concerned about “success” than we are about the cross.

You have made very good initial steps in experimenting with some new ideas and fresh perspectives. These steps can turn into strides that help create an exciting future at WSBC. One of the indispensable ingredients for creating a culture of experimentation is to be in constant conversation with each other. One of the best means for this kind of conversation is in the context of a small group. This is a great setting for sharing and hearing ideas, dreams, and passions for what God is saying to you as a church family.

I am grateful for the privilege of spending time experimenting along with you. It is my prayer that as we continue the journey we will experience more and more of God’s Kingdom mission as a daily reality. Thank you for your openness, flexibility, and willingness to engage in fresh expressions and ideas. Another essential ingredient for experimentation is the ability to laugh together. It is good to see smiles and hear laughter as we move ahead.

THANK YOU

To The WSBC Family,
I want to thank you for all the prayers, cards, visits, and concerns expressed during the passing of my Mom, Eloise Moran. Your kindness has helped me through this very difficult time.
                                    Love, Nancy Cannon

To The WSBC Family,
I would like to express my appreciation to my church family for your love and care since my return home from having back surgery. The cards, food, calls, and prayers helped us so much. Also, many thanks to my Sally who has been by my side the whole time.
It is truly a blessing to have a caring family and church family. Again, I thank you and wish for you God’s richest blessings.
                                    Sincerely, Ann Jones

The Dameron Family is truly blessed to have received so many kind expressions of sympathy during Joan’s illness and passing. Thank you for your words of concern and encouragement, visits, cards, prayers, memorial gifts and for the strong presence of support, especially at Joan’s memorial service. All of these many acts of kindness have helped to make a difficult time much more bearable. From the bottom of our hearts, the Damerons say “THANK YOU.”

To WSBC Congregation,
Thank you for your generous donation for our summer camp fund. Your donation will allow two scouts to attend summer camp this year at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation in Pennsylvania. This is an opportunity for them to experience a different part of the country and be exposed to scouts from a different area. Summer camp is a vital part of the scouting program. It allows these young men to grow in their relationships with their peers and in their personal responsibility.
Thank you again for your continued support of Troop 235.

AUGUST FOOD PANTRY NEWS
On Tuesday, July 20th we distributed our 1000th bag of groceries since October 1st, 2009.  In the first 3 weeks of July we distributed 105 bags; and we expect a record breaking (119) month as we continue to get new recipients.  Some have been from Kellum Seafood which has had to finally lay off shuckers because of lack of oysters from Louisiana.  We have also had several new recipients who would normally be on menhaden boats in the Gulf but have come home because the boats can't go out.  They are hoping to get checks from BP but so far, nothing.  These men have not made any money since the first part of April.
On a good note, we are now able to go to the Central Virginia Food Bank whenever we need and have been able to get most of our food from there at greatly reduced cost.  Also we are VERY thankful for the new ramp which makes getting cases of food into church much easier and is also easier on our recipients coming to the pantry.  That little step outside the door was a hazard !!!
We continue to have individuals who are giving monthly support including donating money for dog and cat food.  White Stone and Ashbury United Methodist Churches have also donated food this month.
Please continue to pray and support this ministry to our community and pray for the waters and people of the Gulf.

CHURCH VAN
I have been on suchhh a go since coming to live at WSBC. I have been on a trip to Newport News to a VBS Workshop, bowling in Gloucester, a beach party lock-in with the kids, a Christian concert and Stevie’s for ice cream (yum) after the concert and to a memorial service. My latest adventure was to the doctor to get new oil and a health check-up. I am great and ready to go. I love sitting in the shade under a nice tree but it does get a little boring so be sure and call me when we have a new adventure coming up – I would love to go!

Freedom Sunday
What a great day we had on July 4th. It began with breakfast at 9:45 a.m. During the breakfast time people said what they were planning to do and putting it in order. I think we surprised ourselves when on Freedom Sunday, the members led the entire worship service and it was a meaningful and Spiritual experience for everyone who attended. The following people participated in the service. Robert Cunningham welcomed everyone, Maida gave the opening prayer, Harry led the congregation in singing “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, Sheila had a reading, Peggy gave a talk on the seeds that we sow, Jennifer read two poems, Susan sang “America, the Beautiful”, Gary and Ann played “God Bless America”, the youth sang “Amazing Grace”, Ada gave a testimony, Robert delivered a talk about our forefathers and religion, Mark had two readings, and Brenda and William led the communion service. Pastor Brian gave the benediction.
